A Cosmic Ride in 2012: Supernova
Ah, 2012: Supernova, a movie that kind of reminded me of those old times when I spent endless Swedish summer nights gazing at the starry sky, sipping on a little whisky, and thinking about life’s mysteries. Now, let’s talk about this wild and wobbly ride through space.
First off, there’s Brian Krause. Remember him from Charmed? Here, he plays the scientist who’s trying to save Earth from a supernova. Bit of a cliché? Maybe, but he does it with charm, haha! Then there’s Heather McComb, holding her own as she tries to bring some heart to the chaos.
Mark Roper directed this flick, and—to be honest—it’s a bit like mixing surströmming with ice cream. You’re not entirely sure what’s going on with the flavors, but you can’t stop sniffing it. The special effects? Oh boy, they’re kind of all over the place. I caught myself laughing more than once, especially when a spaceship looked more like a toy my son once got out of a Happy Meal.
One thing though, the film does touch on something interesting, sort of like our love-hate relationship with the unknown, much like trying to understand why Swedes enjoy svart kaffe so much. It’s got this apocalyptic panic flowing through it that makes you wonder about what you’d do if you’re faced with the end of days. Would you be a hero or start hiding under your bed?
So, here’s the thing. If our precious cinema’s like a smorgasbord, then 2012: Supernova is probably that dish you try out of curiosity and then, if nothing else, it gives you a story to tell. Anyone fancy a stjärnskott for dessert?
