So I watched “5 to 7” the other night. Imagine this—you’re in New York, and it’s raining (because of course, when isn’t it raining in a movie New York?), and you just stumble into this love story. It’s kind of like when you find yourself at Riche at 4 PM on a Saturday, and there’s a random jazz band playing, unexpected but delightful.
“5 to 7” is about a young writer, Brian (played by the all-American Anton Yelchin), who falls for a married French woman, Arielle. It’s one of those ‘forbidden love’ stories wrapped up in a ‘beautifully shot’ movie. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical at first. I mean, a 25-year-old having an affair with someone else’s wife isn’t exactly a unique concept. But then, who am I to judge? We all have skeletons, right? Back in the 80s, I tried to grow a mullet. We don’t talk about that.
There’s something so organic about the way it’s filmed. The scenes glide by like you’re flipping through a really posh photography book. And New York—man, it almost steals the show! The sidewalks glisten, the taxis buzz, and it just feels alive. Sorta like a lively night in Stockholm’s Södermalm.
But if I’m honest, the whole ‘proof of love at designated times’ concept felt a bit forced. I mean, real life is messy, not something you clock in and out of. Sometimes you just want those characters to mess up a bit more, you know?
Still, there’s a certain charm. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of a love story with old-school dynamics or just a yearning for something more in today’s fast-paced world. And speaking of fast-paced, I had the same thrilling exhaustion as trying to catch a Pendeltåg just before it leaves!
Check out the trailer, and maybe you’ll see what I mean. I dunno, it might be your jam if you’re into poetic, slightly surreal love stories. Let’s catch up and chat about it over fika sometime!
