Here’s the lowdown on Angel
So, I just got back from checking out Angel, and I gotta say, it was quite a ride. Directed by our own Thomas Vinterberg—you know, the guy behind Another Round—this movie has a mix of the fantastic and the downright puzzling. But more on that in a minute.
First of all, we have Jonna, played by Eva Green. And oh boy, does she bring her A-game. Eva always manages to make you root for her, even when her character’s a bit all over the map. It’s like eating a smörgåstårta, you don’t know if you’re enjoying the shrimp or if the mayonnaise has gone a bit sour.
Ruben Östlund, who produced it, seems to be in fine form. His knack for balancing chaos and charm shows through the whole movie, like trying to bake kanelbullar without them sticking together.
There’s a scene that really took me back, where the characters watch an eclipse. I remember seeing one from the rooftop of my old apartment in Stockholm with some mates. We were all munching on chips and squinting at the sky, trying not to get blinded. It’s funny how a movie can bring back memories like that.
But here’s the thing: the film’s pacing. It kinda feels like molasses in January. There are moments you think, “Okej, get on with it!” Then something thrilling happens, like a surprise semla in a pastry box.
The themes of redemption and self-discovery? They’re there—kinda—but often buried beneath a lot of, well, cinematic fluff. But if you’re into movies that make you think, or just get you talking over a cuppa, this one might be worth a peek. Just maybe catch it on a Friday when you’re not in a rush.
