Asterix and Obelix Meet Cleopatra: A Nostalgic Rollercoaster
So there I was, munching on some knäckebröd and reminiscing about those rainy Wednesday afternoons back in Stockholm when you’d catch a classic film with your pals. And then, *Asterix and Obelix Meet Cleopatra* popped up on my radar again, like an old friend waving from across the street. Directed by Alain Chabat who himself channels some serious comedic vibes as Caesar, this 2002 flick remains one of those laugh-out-loud pieces that just doesn’t get old.
The film’s star—a gem by the way—is Monica Bellucci, playing the alluring Cleopatra. Somehow, Monica makes inciting a pyramid-building competition with Caesar seem glamorous! And let’s not forget Gérard Depardieu as our beloved Obelix. Each time he pops in a wild boar, I’m reminded of summer BBQs by the coast, chatting away with friends while trying to watch the grill. The more things change, huh?
But, does it keep the kids glued to the screen even today? Maybe. There are plenty of slapstick moments, oddball antics, and a vibrant color palette shouting adventure. However, some of the puns might bounce over modern heads like an enthusiastic caper over a hipster frisbee game in Gärdet.
What really struck me, sitting in my living room with the sound of rain tapping on the windows like a curious neighbor, is the simplicity of it all. It’s cinema that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Which can be both refreshing and, I’ll admit, a tad predictable. Kind of like how we can always rely on endless cups of coffee at a Swedish café, always comforting but never shocking.
This movie’s like that pair of worn-out slippers—accustomed and full of stories. A mix of vibrant chaos and cheeky humor, perfect for those nostalgic enough to want to relive a time when comics brought our heroes to life. Those ol’ Asterix comics really age well, don’t they?
