Attack from Beneath: A Dive Into Nostalgia
So, I just watched this bananas movie, “Attack from Beneath,” and let me tell ya—it was something else. Directed by Steven Cantrell, which I must say, well done there steve! And starring the ever-charismatic Chris Roebuck, who, thankfully, hasn’t lost that cheeky glint in his eyes. He’s like the rakknävskvaeft* of Hollywood these days, don’t you think?
Now, the plot is all about these massive sea monsters wreaking havoc, and it reminded me of those afternoons back in the 90s when I’d sneak VHS tapes of Godzilla with my kompis*. We’d munch on cheese doodles till our fingers turned orange – I swear, our folks never had a clue.
The film’s got these grand underwater scenes that are so stunning, I almost felt the fjord breeze on my face. But then—here’s where I’m iffy—it occasionally goes overboard (pun intended) with CGI. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love a good digital explosion, but sometimes ya just wanna see a rubber monster suit, you know?
There’s this moment, maybe halfway through the film, where the characters have a genuine ‘aha!’ discovery under the sea. And in some peculiar way, it drew a parallel to unearthing an old, dusty vinyl—you know it’s scratched but man, that sound! Sometimes imperfections bring charm.
Hans Zimmer did the score, and I’m telling you, his music makes even fish slap fights seem epic. But, I kinda missed the silent suspense, the old-school tension you’d feel in classic Swedish cinema—ah, but maybe that’s me being sentimental.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s a fun flick. Maybe not a masterpiece, but perfect for a lazy Sunday when you want some light-hearted thrills and a pinch of nostalgia. Plus, it makes you think about those old monster films, and that ain’t bad!
