Australiens
So, Australiens. Let me tell ya, this is no ordinary alien flick. Think of it as a love child between a sci-fi rave and a Sunday roast in the outback. Directed by the zany Joe Bauer, who’s got more creativity in his pinky than most of us have in our entire noggins. And starring the no-so-serious Rita Artmann, who gives the kind of performance that knocks your socks off, even when things get a bit daft.
Now, I remember my first encounter with the great down under… there I was, munching on a pack of Marabou at the Sydney Opera House steps, covered in crimson sunburn and hoping no one would notice. Yes, sunburn does happen to Swedes too, even if we’re used to much colder climates!
Anyway, back to the film. The plot’s as wild as a kangaroo on an espresso binge. Aliens invade Australia, and it’s up to some quirky characters to save the land of kangaroos and koalas. It’s fun, hilarious, and downright bonkers. It’s got that throw-everything-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks energy. Kinda like if your grandma decided to DJ at a club.
The thing is, sometimes the effects are, let’s say, a bit like a home-cooked meal—endearing but not exactly Michelin star. But that’s part of the charm, isn’t it? It’s got heart and guts where it counts.
I think what stuck with me was this weirdly poignant scene. Amidst all the chaos, a character reminisces about simpler days in their old Aussie home. Reminded me of when I’d listen to LPs in me dad’s cozy Stockholm apartment, the scratchy vinyl echoing like good memories.
Australiens is chaotic, funny, and strangely nostalgic. Isn’t that what films are for? Even if they happen to feature green men with ray guns.
