AWOL-72: A Mysterious, Action-packed Ride
AWOL-72! What an intriguing piece of work. The film, starring Luke Goss, got me hooked for its elusive plot. You know, it’s crazy how Goss went from being a popstar in Bros to playing this intense role as a rogue Marine. The director, Christian Sesma, did well attempting a fresh spin on the worn-out action genre. Interesting fella, Sesma, with a knack for adding tension in places you don’t expect.
There’s this funny memory. Years back, when I first heard about soldiers going ‘AWOL’, I thought it was just some legal term, but an uncle explained it to me during a heated discussion over the shortage of Allsång på Skansen episodes. Odd connection, but that’s how my brain works!
Back to the film. It’s not perfect. Sometimes it feels like it could’ve done with a bit more meat on the bones. Know what I mean? The action scenes though, they’re paced well enough to keep you on your toes. RZA makes a brief appearance, and his screen presence is always cool—adds a little swagger.
The story dances around secrecy and espionage, with those ever-capable baddies tracking down Conrad Miller (Goss). Oh, the tension! But, there were bits where I kinda felt like, “Come on guys, could’ve punched it up a tad.” And there’s a moment when the sax in the background music reminded me of a Stockholm twilight. Majestic, but you don’t always notice it.
If you’re into action flicks and enjoy a bit of moody intrigue peppered with some questionable plot turns, AWOL-72 is worth a look. Maybe grab a kanelbulle and make it a cozy movie night with friends—nothing wrong with a bit of suspense with your fika!
