Blodspengar, or Blood Money as it’s called in English, has been a trip, folks. Directed by Luke White, the film takes you on a wild ride through the tangled web of greed, betrayal, and, well, money. The star-studded cast includes John Cusack, who seems a bit out of place here—he’s not his usual self and you can kinda feel it. Maybe the script didn’t do him justice? I dunno.
The plot revolves around three friends who, while on a wilderness trip, stumble upon a suitcase filled with cash. Now, who hasn’t dreamt of finding a hidden stash of money? But trust me, it’s more of a nightmare than a fairytale. You’d think I’d have learned after watching all those American thrillers, but here we are. There’s a lot of tension, and I could practically hear my heartbeat pounding in my ears during the more suspenseful scenes. And the soundtrack marries well with the palpable fear—kinda like the tension you feel before the results of Melodifestivalen are announced.
And speaking of Melodifestivalen, isn’t it ironic how Swedish thrillers usually have this cold, calculated vibe while this American one tries but kinda misses the mark? It’s not entirely bad, though. Some moments were genuinely gripping, especially when you delve into the wild terrain—there’s this scene with wind rustling through the leaves, owls hooting—totally breathtaking. It made me miss those camping trips in the Swedish forests with family, where the scariest thing we’d encounter would be a lost hiker asking for directions.
But, let’s get real. There are some holes in the story, like Swiss cheese, bits that didn’t quite click. I mean, some characters feel underdeveloped to the point where you almost don’t care what happens to them. Maybe the film’s trying too hard to be complex? And does every character need a tragic backstory? I ain’t so sure.
Overall, Blood Money isn’t exactly Köpings Hedemora Is but, if you’re in the mood for a tense, albeit slightly flawed, thriller? It might just be your cup of kaffe.
