Hey there, movie lovers! 🤓
So, last night I watched this film called “Boarding School,” and let me tell you, it was quite a ride. I think it landed somewhere between a thriller and a psychological drama, but honestly, I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. Imagine combining the eerie vibes of “The Others” with a dash of “Dead Poets Society.” Sounds a bit odd, right? But it kinda works.
Okay, the plot follows this young lad Jacob, who gets sent off to a creepy boarding school after acting out a bit. This place is supposed to “help” him, but it turns out to be more of a nightmare factory than a learning institution. Hansel and Gretel would’ve run the other way! The headmaster and his wife are terrifyingly strict. I mean, their disciplinarian approach makes Matilda’s Trunchbull look like a softie.
But the thing is, even with its gothic setup and intense scenes, there’s this weirdly captivating aura about it. The cinematography is top-notch, especially the use of shadows and light. It gives this claustrophobic feeling, almost like those long, dark Swedish winters. And speaking of, ever visited an old Swedish manor during vintertid? That’s the kind of haunting beauty this film embodies.
Now, one thing I found a bit iffy was the pacing. Some parts just draaagged on. Especially the middle portion where it felt like they were filling time with too many close-ups and brooding silences. Seriously, if I had a krona for every prolonged stare into the abyss…
But let’s talk about the performances—Sterling Jerins (Jacob) really nails that confused, vulnerable, and kind of rebellious kid vibe. Reminded me of those times when I got into trouble in school and was sent to the principal’s office. Not that my principal was a tyrant, but you get the gist. The other kid actors, too, bring a lot to the table. Hats off to them for handling such heavy material.
So, if you’re into dark, moody settings and don’t mind a story that unfolds at its own pace, Boarding School might just tick those boxes for you. Maybe watch it with the lights on, though, especially if you have an overactive imagination like mine.
