Oh boy, where to begin with “Breakdown Lane”? It’s one of those films that ambles into your life like an awkward friend at Midsummer and you’re not exactly sure if it’s going to bring you a good laugh or a headache. First off, it’s got zombies, desert wasteland, and a broken car—a classic combo for a bit of Dagens Nyheter headline action. We’ve got Jane, played with equal parts gusto and exasperation by Whitney Moore, stranded on a desert road. Now, me personally, I couldn’t help but think of that time I got a flat tire on the road to Kiruna. Only difference was, instead of zombies, I was fending off a particularly aggressive reindeer.

Visually, it has its moments. There’s something about the contrast of the stark desert with the unsettling silence that tickles that little nerve of apprehension, like when you’re watching “Får vi följa med” and wondering if they’ll actually get inside the house. But the plot, oh dear, it meanders like a drunk Swede on Valborg’s night. There’s this mix of survival tactics and horror which works kind of like mixing sill and lingon—you’re not quite sure if it was a good idea after all.

The soundtrack though, I gotta say, nails it. The tension and the calm moments are scored in a way that makes you almost forget the bumps in the storyline. Almost, I said. But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom—maybe grab a couple of semlor, snuggle up and watch it with a friend. You might just find yourself laughing at the absurdity of it all.
