So… Bug. What a trip, right? Directed by William Friedkin, who brought us The Exorcist, so, you know, I was seated in anticipation with a mix of excitement and maybe a pinch of fear when I first saw it. But, honestly, it wasn’t really about creepy crawlies in that typical sense we think of. More of a deep dive into the psychology of paranoia and obsession.
The film knots its tension in a dim, gritty motel room – doesn’t that already send shivers up your spine? The two main characters, played by Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon, spiral down a rabbit hole of madness. It’s both intimate and suffocating. And just a bit mind-bending.
Here’s the thing: while it’s wildly intense, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. On a scale of Götlaborgskarameller to Nobel Prize banquet, I’d say it’s comfortably nestled at a Thursday fika where someone randomly starts discussing conspiracy theories. Konstigt men… ganska intressant.
At a summer ärtsoppa fest a few years back, a mate of mine started ranting about bugs and conspiracies, sparked only by this film. That’s when I realized, Bug hits you where the shadows of your mind play tricks on you. There I was, just wanting a warm bowl of blåbärssoppa, and suddenly, I’m trapped in a debate over imaginary bugs.
So, if you’re in the mood for something that’ll leave you questioning reality, and maybe yourself, give Bug a whirl. But hey, don’t watch it alone. Who knows what thoughts will linger when the credits roll.
