Hey friends!
So, I decided to watch “Choke” last night. You know, the one based on Chuck Palahniuk’s novel. Have any of you read it? It’s a wild ride from start to finish. Anyway, I wasn’t sure what to expect since movie adaptations can be a bit hit or miss.
First things first, Sam Rockwell is an absolute legend, as usual. He plays Victor Mancini, a historical theme park worker who’s got some pretty serious mommy issues. Rockwell nails that sleazy yet somehow charming vibe. Reminded me of how we used to joke about Raspen’s dodgy acting skills, except Rockwell actually pulls it off!
The film’s dark humor really surprised me. It’s one of those you either get or you don’t. Remember how we laughed ourselves silly at that film festival when the humor was so bizarrely offbeat? That’s what “Choke” felt like. Kind of like watching someone crack a joke at the most inappropriate time, but you can’t help but laugh.
Oh, and the whole choking scam Victor runs at upscale restaurants? Hilarious and super weird. But at times, I felt the plot was choking on its own complexity (pun intended). There’s this underlying critique of the healthcare system and religious nonsense, which adds depth but muddles things a bit too. Like when you try to make rakfisk agreeable to everyone – some will get it, others…not so much.
Angelica Huston, playing Victor’s mom, brings that nostalgic touch. She’s phenomenal, reminding me of the strong women in Bergman’s films. The dynamic between her and Rockwell, though, was almost painfully real, a bit like digging up old, unsettled family dirt.
But, and it’s a big but, the film sometimes tries too hard. There are moments when you’re just sitting there thinking, “Okay…now what?” It’s like listening to an album where a few songs just don’t hit the right note.
All in all, if you’re into offbeat, slightly twisted comedies with a sprinkle of Palahniuk madness, “Choke” is worth a watch. Just keep your expectations in check and let the absurdity wash over you.
Anyway, here’s the trailer if you’re curious: Choke.
Cheers
