Diplomacy: A Tale of High Stakes
So, I just watched “Diplomacy” and I gotta say, it was a bit like a roller coaster, but one of those old wooden ones you sort of enjoy but are also terrified of falling off. The film is directed by the ever-remarkable Volker Schlöndorff, who you might remembr from “The Tin Drum.” His meticulous eye for historical dramas is on full display here. And let me tell ya, he doesn’t disappoint. Niels Arestrup and André Dussollier are sparring like two heavyweight champs in the ring—the tension between them is just electric.
The movie is all about that nerve-wracking moment in 1944 when Paris was nearly blown to smithereens. I mean, imagine Rådhuset in Stockholm about to be turned into gravel, pretty gut-wrenching, right? I kept thinking about that time I visited the Gustaf Adolfs Torg, how I just stood there, soaking in the history, and God forbid something so monumental disappear in a flash. In “Diplomacy,” it all boils down to one night’s negotiation to save a city steeped in history and culture.
I have to admit, I find myself chuckling that a movie so deeply serious has a scene with a baguette—I know, total cliché—but it actually works. The interplay between dialogue-heavy scenes and moments of stark silence really makes you feel the weight of each decision. But, gotta be honest, there were times I wished they’d speed things up a bit. I’m not exactly known for my patience, especially when my coffee’s running low.
It’s one of those films where you leave the cinema pondering what you’d do if you were put in such a moral quagmire. Makes ya think, doesn’t it? Maybe it’d be like trying to decide between a summer in the archipelago or hitting the slopes up north—except with way more at stake.
All in all, I’d definitely recommend giving “Diplomacy” a whirl. It’s intense, rich with dialogue, and paints a vivid picture of how much we rely on the thin strings of human decency to keep our world from unraveling. You’ll probably look at your morning fika quite differently after this one.
