Four Lions

Four Lions, what a trip, huh? Directed by Chris Morris, who’s known for all that sharp, satirical genius, this film is like a roller-coaster in a theme park built by Monty Python and sprinkled with some dark, chaotic seasoning. I went into it with my expectations all over the map, and let me tell you, it’s nothing like I’ve seen before.

The story follows a group of bumbling jihadis that somehow manage to make terrorism absurdly funny. I mean, Riz Ahmed, who’s been in everything lately, is just brilliant as Omar. He really makes you root for him, even though, you know, he’s planning something quite unspeakable. The humor’s dark enough to align with our kinda twisted Swedish humor, but it sure pokes the dagger into some serious bits.

Now, talk about a trip down memory lane—watching this reminded me of a summer evening by Lake Mälaren. Me and a couple of pals were discussing heavy stuff while trying not to light the barbeque ablaze. The fire department wasn’t happy, let me tell you! The film’s way of clashing humor and serious issues brought me right back to that evening. We were there, laughing through the smoke while contemplating the world’s pressing issues.

The film’s absurdity might throw some off, especially those used to clear-cut comedies. There’s an intensity here, a reality lying beneath the giggles. And sometimes, I wonder if we’re laughing because it’s funny or because it’s too close to reality and makes us uncomfortable.

Do I love it? Probably, but not fully sure yet. I reckon it somewhere between a laugh riot and a serious chat over fika. It’s a wild ride, a bit like lunch at IKEA where you don’t know if you should feel happy or just mildly confused about everything. All in all, it’s a must-watch for anyone looking to stretch their boundaries a little, and hey, if you’re like me, to reflect on those odd little memories inspired by a really, really black comedy.
