Tough Sand, Tougher Choices

Mate, let me tell you about *March or Die*. Ya know, sometimes a film sneaks up on you like a bon’na’karl at a fika – you didn’t think you’d need it, but suddenly it’s there, stirring something up. Over the weekend, I dusted off this little gem with Gene Hackman and Terence Hill at the helm. Directed by Dick Richards, who, let’s face it, has a knack for gritty storytelling. You can almost feel the sand sticking in your clothes as you watch – and by “almost,” I mean grab a broom ’cause your carpet suddenly feels like the Sahara.

So Hackman, right? He’s this no-nonsense French Foreign Legion major, leading a ragtag bunch including Hill, who’s got that cheeky outlaw charm he perfected in spaghetti westerns. They’re off defending a dig site from raiders, and everything is dust, sweat and that perpetual feeling of impending doom. Feels a bit like biking home during a Stockholm snowstorm in March – you know it isn’t gonna end well but, well, here we are.

Honestly, I dunno if it’s a masterpiece, but there’s something there. It’s like watching a stubborn tjockskalle refusing to give up, and in a way, that’s inspiring. I remember my own adventures – once I almost joined a band of misfits on a dig near Gotland. Okay, not really, but my imagination ran wild after visiting a Viking reenactment. Who knew reenactors could be such drama enthusiasts?

Anyway, if you’re in the mood to feel the grit under your nails without leaving the comfort of your couch, give *March or Die* a shot. Just maybe keep some lingonberry juice on hand. You know, for hydration. It won’t change your life, but maybe, just maybe, it’ll get you thinking about what makes a person keep marching despite all odds. Plus, Hackman in uniform. Come on.
