I just saw “Miracle at St. Anna” and man, what a ride. It’s one of those war movies that hit you right in the gut, you know? Spike Lee directs this one, which means you’re in for a blend of action, history, and some straight-up emotional punches.

So, the movie’s set during WWII, and it follows four African American soldiers from the 92nd Buffalo Soldier Division who get trapped behind enemy lines in Italy. They try to help an Italian boy who’s lost his family. Sounds heavy, right? That’s ’cause it is. But let’s not kid ourselves—there are moments where the movie loses its grip a bit, like when the plot gets tangled up in too many threads. It’s like trying to knit a sweater with five different colors and ending up with something you didn’t quite plan.

Now, on the visual side, there’s some stunning cinematography here. The Italian countryside looks gorgeous, and the chaos of war scenes feel almost too real sometimes. It really takes you into the mess of it all. Can almost smell the gunpowder and hear the echoes of yells and shots ringing in your ears.

I gotta say, the performances really stand out. Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, and Laz Alonso—they all bring their A-game. You get pulled into their brotherhood, their fears, their frustrations. They make you laugh and cry, sometimes all in the same scene. But, not to sugarcoat it, the movie’s pacing could’ve been better. There were moments where I was like, “Come on, get to the point already!”

If you’re a sucker for war films with heart, give this one a shot. I mean, it’s not perfect, but what is? Life’s messy, and so is “Miracle at St. Anna”.
