Perfect Opposites – A Cinematic Conundrum

There are films that make you scratch your head in that “vad är det som händer” kind of way, and Perfect Opposites is one of those peculiars. Starring the ever-charming Piper Perabo and the broodingly handsome Martin Henderson, I wasn’t quite sure if I was watching a romance unfold or a slow-motion train wreck. The director, you know, Matt Cooper, isn’t exactly Spielberg, but he’s trying, bless his heart.

Do you remember the time when you heard ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All” for the first time and thought, “what’s this emotional rollercoaster”? Well, this film might not be ABBA, but it does stir some feelings up. The main duo, they give us a love story that’s about as predictable as Swedish weather in April – one moment it’s sunshine, the next a snowstorm.

I had this odd little memory come floating back as I watched. When I was in my 20s, there was this girl I met at a party in Stockholm. She was sunshine, pure and simple, while I was, well, consistently overcast. We were like kanelbullar and surströmming – intriguing separately but together? I don’t know… questionable. Much like these two in the movie.

What caught my ear, though, was the soundtrack, which had a quirky edge, kind of like that unexpected guitar riff in Roxette’s “The Look.” It works, it really does. But maybe the film runs a bit long—it’s like having one too many Prinsesstårta slices during fika—at first sweet, later a bit overwhelming.

The theme? For all its jagged edges, Perfect Opposites does remind you of the tender chaos that love can be. It might just spark a few reflections in your own kaffekopp of romance. Would I watch it again? Meh, kanske. It’s a smörgåsbord of emotions, and maybe not for everyone’s taste, but still worth a bite.
