Random Tropical Paradise: A Låt-gå Kind of Getaway

Whew, so I finally watched Random Tropical Paradise last Friday night, and let me tell you, it’s that sort of film that feels like a mix between a pre-party at Way Out West gone wild and a Friday bar at the old Lilla Torg in Malmö, ya know? Directed by Sanjeev Sirpal (never heard of him before to be honest, but apparently he’s got an eye for absurd party energy), this flick chucks us straight into a botched wedding and an unplanned honeymoon filled with shenanigans.

Bro, Bryan Greenberg is in it, bringing that wholesome-confused energy he does, and Brooks Wheelan from Saturday Night Live shows up and acts like your mate who obviously peaked in gymnasiet but still wears Ray-Bans indoors. Cedric the Entertainer pops by, too, which totally surprised me – thought I’d see him more at Oscars than on a drunken beach in this film.

I sort of dig these types of comedies, but sometimes the script feels like a mix between Sällskapsresan and “someone found a suitcase full of skämt from 2005.” Some jokes land, a few fall a bit like a Finnish sauna in December – just flat and odd.

Maybe I’m biased, but every time the gang ended up in a weird bar with blinking lights, I remembered that one time in Thailand, 2008, got lost after too many Singha beers and woke up in a hammock with a guy called Lasse who made toasties on his scooter. Bit the same energy.

You know, it’s not as sharp as a Ruben Östlund flick, but it’s harmless and you might even recognize yourself in that “escape reality” vibe. Good for a random laugh with your mates, especially if you want to pretend you’re somewhere warmer, if just for 90 minutes.
