Satanic: A Rollercoaster of Spooks and Unintentional Laughs

Alright folks, grab your popcorn ’cause today we’re diving into “Satanic.” Directed by Jeffrey Hunt and starring the likes of Sarah Hyland, known from Modern Family – yeah, the one with the quirky eyebrows and all – this flick takes you on a wild ride down the spook streets of Los Angeles. A kind of fright fest but…with training wheels.

Now, I’m not one to jump at every horror film that pops up, but there was something about the promise of occult shenanigans that reminded me of a midsommar night. You know, when the sun never goes down and everyone’s still out having a grill at 2 am. There’s a certain eerie-yet-comforting feeling in that. I thought maybe “Satanic” would capture a smidge of that vibe.

I’ll be honest, the plot is a bit like Folktrace, confusing and all over the place, but sometimes that’s the charm. The four friends’ adventure (or misadventure) in search of cult experiences is as chaotic as a night out on Stureplan, post-midnight. The script sometimes tried too hard to scare me, like when your cousin’s dog barks at its own reflection. But hey, it did keep me awake!

I must admit, there was a moment, though, when I got that eerie goosebumps feeling. You know, like when you hear a branch crack in the forest behind the summer cabin? Maybe it was because of the music, which was on point like a well-played Swedish schlager song—abrasive, yet strangely hypnotic. I swear, the sound design deserves some creds.

But here’s the kicker: amid those dime-a-dozen horror tropes, there’s a heart pounding message about friendship and curiosity. Not sure if it was intentional, but it sorta worked. Almost like trying Surströmming for the first time – you brace yourself for terror, but it’s really all about the experience and sharing the story later.

So, is “Satanic” set to win Oscars? Nah. But it’s decent fun, just like bingewatching “Mord i Midsomer” on a rainy afternoon. It’s worth the watch if you fancy a giggle with your ghouls. Remember to keep the lights low and the expectations lower.
