Shelter (aka 6 Souls): A Strange Brew of Minds and Mysteries

Alright, folks, gather round the proverbial fika table, because today we’re diving into “Shelter,” or “6 Souls” as it’s sometimes known – a real thriller that’s got twists tighter than that IKEA shelf you definitely put together without reading the instructions (let’s be honest).

So, we’ve got Julianne Moore, who, let’s be real, could make reading the phone book suspenseful, playing a psychiatrist who’s trying to untangle the twisted mind of a man with multiple personalities. Spoiler alert (not really): she finds way more than she bargained for! Rhys Ifans pops up too, and I can’t help but always picture him in “Notting Hill.” Strange what sticks, right?

Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, the film’s got some of that eerie Nordic noir atmosphere we Swedes can’t get enough of. But sometimes I felt like they were trying to stuff five films into one. It’s like when you go to the Smörgåsbord, and your eyes are way bigger than your stomach.

There were moments that reminded me of those long summer nights in Sweden, where it’s all peaceful in the stillness, but there’s a haunting vibe you can’t quite shake off. It’s a film that makes you question identity – not too different from when I tried to convince my family that meatballs are better with cranberry sauce.

While the plot twists keep you guessing, they also occasionally veer off into the ‘are you surrre?’ territory. I appreciate a good psychological puzzler, but maybe this one was a tad overcooked? Yet, somewhere in the chaos, there are seeds of thought worth planting – about faith, identity, and how much we really know our own minds.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for a wild ride. But maybe, just maybe, keep a Swedish dictionary handy for those profound existential moments… or not. We’re adventurous like that, aren’t we?
