She’s Funny That Way – A Quirky Ride with A-list Stars
She’s Funny That Way is like being at a Swedish summer festival: it’s chaotic, full of surprises, and sometimes you don’t know what’s happening but you’re somehow having fun.
Directed by Peter Bogdanovich—yeah, the guy who made The Last Picture Show—this film takes us into the tangled, sometimes absurd, lives of a group of New Yorkers played by a stellar cast. We’ve got Owen Wilson as a philandering director, Imogen Poots as the muse with a twist, and Jennifer Aniston as an edgy therapist who clearly skipped the seminar on professional boundaries. Aniston is honestly a hoot here. If only Freud could’ve seen her, he’d maybe have a thing or two to scribble in his little notebook.
There’s something about all this that strangely reminds me of the yearly crayfish parties. You know when your third cousin starts telling you about Uncle Lennart’s embarrassing dance moves, and it spirals into a messy but somehow delightful tale? Well, it’s kind of like that.
The movie doesn’t always hit the mark. Some jokes land like a wet sock, and I scratched my head more than once wondering where the plot was haulin’ us. But it’s sort of like mom’s “cabbage and meatballs”—you’re not totally sure of the ingredients, but you enjoy ‘cause it’s got love in it.
The ensemble cast is really what makes the film, though. And there’s something inexplicably charming about the screwball nature of it all. It’s like a soft breeze of nostalgia, reminding us of the old comedy classics.
Is it a masterpiece? Nah. But it’s a feel-good flick that knows it’s a little silly, and doesn’t shy away from it. Maybe give it a whirl on a – rainy – Wednesday when you’re avoiding cleaning the garage. Movie’s like an old friend—messy, welcoming, and loads of fun.
