Små vita lögner: A Cocktail of Life, Love, and Lies
Yesterday, I decided to rewatch “Små vita lögner” – or as the French call it, “Les petits mouchoirs”– and holy moly, it’s still got that punch! Directed by Guillaume Canet, this 2010 film is like that mixed bag of lösgodis you pick up at Pressbyrån – some bits you love, others, you just chuckle and move on.
Now, let me tell ya, the cast is like the Swedish All-Star team joining forces with the French elites. We’ve got the fabulous Marion Cotillard—she’s sorta like our own Noomi Rapace in terms of gravitas. There’s also François Cluzet, that charmingly rugged dude, remindin’ me a bit of Rolf Lassgård with a French twist. They all pull together a tapestry of laughs, tears, and those awkward silences you kinda feel in your bones.
Here’s the kicker—this film’s theme of friendship reminded me of that one midsommar night back in 2005. You know, when everyone’s in their white outfits, dancing around the maypole, and you end up sharing old stories with pals around the fire, discovering everyone’s little white lies. The film nails it; the way people try to keep it all together when everything’s falling apart… classic Swedish summer chaos.
But let’s be real, sometimes the plot drags along like an old Volvo on a snow-clogged road. You get stuck in parts where you’re almost yelling “Kom igen!” at the screen. And those melodramatic scenes? A bit over the top like the topping on your sister-in-law’s semla.
Visually, though, the film’s stunning. France’s beaches practically leap out at ya, making you want to book the next flight out. But, truth be told, it’s not just about the visuals or the A-listers. It’s about those raw, unfiltered moments, much like life back home in Sverige. Give it a go and maybe keep a box of tissues and a friend handy. Or don’t. It’s your call!
