Pizza-Packed Adventure with a Dash of Nostalgia
Okay, folks, so I watched “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” and I’m not even gonna pretend it wasn’t a trip down memory lane. You remember when you were a kid and used to sprint to your vänspelarens (that’s “friend’s player” for the rest of you across the water) and pop in a VHS? Those were the days, right?
This flick came out in ’91, back when Vanilla Ice thought he was going to be an acting legend and not just a one-hit wonder. Speaking of which, his cameo… just wow. Watching him bust out “Ninja Rap” while the Turtles duked it out was a classic cheesy moment, but hey, that’s part of its charm! Michael Pressman directed this piece, which feels like eating a pizza – it ain’t fine dining, but it sure is satisfying.
Okay, let’s talk turtles. Leo, Donnie, Raph, and Mikey are back and voiced by some real characters, but the real stars are probably the suits. I mean, those costumes are practically art. It’s amazing what they could do back in the day without the CGI we just eat up today. Ernie Reyes Jr. gets a lot of screen time too, doing more flips than a pancake on shrove Tuesday.
But, you know what’s really great? The Ooze! It’s like a metaphor for all those things we accidentally mess with in life, thinking it’s all gonna be fine, and then boom, you’ve got mutant dandelions in your backyard. Or maybe it’s just me with my “green thumb.”
The nostalgia hit hard when I watched this. Reminded me of my little bror and his obsession with nunchucks. It’s weird thinking about it now as an adult, with all the serious stuff in life and whatnot. But at its heart, this movie is about friendship and family, pizza and sewer-dwelling. And I kinda think we all need a bit more of that nowadays.
