Alright folks, buckle up because today we’re diving into “The Dead”, and honestly, it’s a wild ride.

So, “The Dead”. Directed by the Ford brothers – no, not related to Harrison, haha – this one had me perk up in my comfy Ikea armchair. It’s essentially a zombie flick, but don’t roll your eyes just yet. Filmed in West Africa, it knocks you over with stunning visuals. Seriously, the African sunset alone is worth the ticket price. But then again, we Swedes do love a good sunset, right?

The story follows Lt. Brian Murphy, played by Rob Freeman, who’s basically stranded in a zombie apocalypse and trying to survive. What struck me the most was the palpable sense of isolation. I haven’t felt that kind of on-screen loneliness since I got lost in Gamla Stan during the Christmas rush. The zombies are slow but relentless, like winter dragging on in January. They aren’t the sprinting maniacs you get in other films. Here, they just keep coming, and there’s something eerily authentic about that.

But let’s be real, not everything hits the mark. Some of the dialogue feels clunky, like an overcooked meatball, and the pacing drags in places. Plus, there were moments where I thought, “Come on, nobody would make that decision!” Maybe it’s my Swede’s love for rationality talking but it bugged me.

That said, the film’s tone and setting are so unique. There’s an underlying commentary on colonialism and survival that’s hard to miss. It gave me flashbacks to reading “Herzog Travels” as a kid, with the whole eerie yet exotic vibe.

Overall, it’s a mixed bag but definitely worth a watch. Maybe get a “fika” ready so you can take a break if it gets too intense (trust me, you’ll want to).
