Well, “The Homesman” – what a brooding piece of cinema! Directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones, this film takes us on a dusty journey through the American frontier. But it’s not exactly a typical Western, I tell ya. You can feel the desolation through the screen, makes one almost grateful for the Swedish winter chill just to escape that heat!
The story centers on Mary Bee Cuddy, played by Hilary Swank. She’s strong, tough as a Ryggåsbod (one of those sturdy Swedish log cabins), yet deeply lonely. Now, who hasn’t felt that combo every once in a while, right? When she volunteers to transport three women who’ve lost their minds back East, she ends up dragging along Tommy Lee Jones’ character, a grizzled drifter. Their dynamic is something to behold, full of grudging respect and unexpected laughs.
Speaking of Swedish connections, I remember back in ’96, sitting in a cozy Stockholm cinema, a friend whispered to me, “Why are Americans always on the move in their films?” It’s a question I find myself pondering with “The Homesman.” There’s something about that journey, the longing for something better or different… maybe it’s as familiar to them as Fika is to us?
The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful. Long, sweeping shots of barren landscapes, almost reminiscent of Dalarna’s vastness on a gloomy day. I nearly felt the grit in my teeth. But, there’s a sadness underneath it all that’s hard to shake off.
Some parts left me scratching my head. The pace is slower than molasses in January, and a few plot points feel like detours. Yet, there’s a poetic melancholy that kinda sticks with you, like the aftertaste of a good surströmming – not everyone’s cup of tea, but unforgettable.
Anyway, have a look at the trailer if you haven’t: The Homesman. Let me know what you think!
