Royal Shenanigans and Corny Delight
Sitting here with a nice cup of kaffe, I’m digesting the cinematic oddity that is *The Prince & Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon*. A friend of mine once asked, “Is it possible to eat Princess Cake and still feel royal?” After watching this film, I’d say yes, if you embrace both the charm and the cheesiness.
So, we have our royal couple, Edvard (Chris Geere) and Paige (Kam Heskin), off to a honeymoon. And you guessed it—they get tangled up in the affairs of kingdomhood. The direction by Catherine Cyran is like a smorgasbord at a Swedish Christmas table—it’s packed with things, but you might not like every bite.
First off, the film doesn’t boast Hollywood magnates or Sundance-winning directors. Its unassuming charm is in its B-movie simplicity. Honestly, it kinda reminded me of those nordic romantic comedies, like those cute but predictable flicks we get on TV at midnight. Charles Dance wasn’t lurking around, nor did Spielberg surprise us with a guest cameo. But hey, sometimes you just wanna dip your toes in light-hearted frivolity, yeah?
The cinematography felt like a throwback to one of those overdone family videos—unpolished yet endearing. And there’s a scene where the couple ends up in the forest, trying to be alone, and it took me back to when I camped in Tyresta with my partner. Fresh air, trees, and sudden meteor showers—it’s as if the film tried to capture that alright, but ended up more Gustav Vasas’ socks than Nobel Prize material.
To be honest, the storyline doesn’t strive for depth. But there’s something comforting about its predictability. It’s a little like watching Melodifestivalen—polished noise with charm lying somewhere in the chaos.
If you’re in the mood for something akin to the cheesy stations of Göteborgs Central early in the morning, and want to laugh at all the absurdities, give it a go. But, I say, don’t expect to walk away with more than a few giggles and a sudden craving for a Swedish fika. How do you say, “It ain’t no Ingmar Bergman, but it could be a guilty pleasure for a cold Sunday”?
