Up for Love: A Little Guy with Big Heart
There’s this French film, you know, “Up for Love,” where Jean Dujardin plays a successful architect who happens to be… well, quite short. Really short. And we got Virginie Efira in there, bringing some charming vibes as the lady who falls for him. Directed by Laurent Tirard, who did those Astérix movies. So you get the idea—this guy knows his comedy!
But the movie, it’s a bit like a Swedish smörgåsbord. Some parts are delicious, others are just… there. Dujardin’s performance, though—man, the guy’s got charisma that could charm the spots off a Dalmatian, I swear! Just that his height, or lack thereof, becomes a running joke. Sometimes funny, sometimes just… eh, I dunno—feels a bit old school, you know?
Anyway, watching this flick, I was reminded of that time in Gothenburg, at the film festival, when I bumped into a friend who’s like two meters tall. He was towering over everyone, and there I was, trying to make eye contact from waay down there. Made me chuckle thinking about the height difference and the whole “love sees no boundaries” thing.
The film swings between comedy and romance. One moment, it’s making you laugh, and the next, it’s got these heart-tugging scenes. But I kinda wished it didn’t lean so heavily on the height gags. It’s like, come on, give me a break!
All in all, it’s a good laugh on a Friday night with some lösgodis and maybe a beer—or two! Sure, there are moments that seem stuck in another decade, but isn’t that part of the charm? It’s got heart, even if it sometimes stumbles over its own feet. Or should I say, its lack of height? Ha! You get it.
