Alright folks, so I dove into “Welcome to Willits” the other night – think it was around 8 PM, just when the dark’s creeping in and you know, the perfect time to watch something weird and intense. Sofijah and I sat down with our snacks and decided to give it a go. Honestly, wasn’t too sure what to expect. Aliens, horror, and a bit of comedy all smashed together – risky business, I thought.
So, this film? It strikes out pretty wild right from the start. You got your deep forest setting in Northern California, sorta like our own Swedish forests but way more… I don’t know, American? All that combined with a crew of quirky young adults looking for a good time. And then there’s this really paranoid methhead who’s convinced aliens are out to get him. Oh, and his wife – total badass, trust me.
First off, the visuals. Solid work there. The aliens weren’t those cheesy, green men we’ve seen too much. They had this eerie vibe, more like something out of a fever dream. It’s got that kinda feel which makes you a bit uncomfortable but also keeps you glued to the screen.
What really hit home for me was the paranoia aspect. I remember my summer in Värmland a few years ago; Tody, my cousin, convinced there was something lurking in the woods near our summerhouse. We were teenagers, fueled by ghost stories and maybe one too many episodes of The X-Files. But this film? It exaggerates that paranoia and makes it almost plausible, given the way it’s acted.
The actors did a decent job, though some lines felt a bit wooden – like they were just going through the motions, you know? But hey, it’s a B-movie, you expect a bit of cheese. Rory Culkin’s cameo was a pleasant surprise but I felt they could’ve used him better somehow. Ah, what do I know?
The soundtrack, though, now that was a treat. Kept the tension alive, somehow playful yet eerie, sorta like dancing on the edge of a knife. Plus, it matched perfectly with the rural setting – imagine a brain-melding combo of vibrant forest life and impending doom.
Now, I gotta be honest, it’s not a film for everyone. If you’re after high-art, high-brow kinda stuff, this ain’t it. But if you’re like me and can appreciate a fun, twisted ride now and then… check out the trailer and see for yourself
