Hey there, my fellow cine-nördar! So I watched “What If” last night, a rom-com that’s sitting somewhere between a comfort blanket and a philosophical chin-scratcher. And friends, let me tell you, it’s one of those films where you walk out of it sort of mulling over life’s unpredictable potholes.
This film’s got Daniel Radcliffe as Wallace—you know, that guy who isn’t Harry Potter anymore, trying to navigate the messy world of platonic friendship. His chemistry with Zoe Kazan’s Chantry is sparkling like a crisp Swedish winter morning. There’s this bit where they’re sitting on a rooftop, the city’s twinkling below, and you can almost feel that chilly Stockholm breeze nipping at your nose.
Now, I’m a sucker for conversations—like that time I had a four-hour fika with an old friend, just talking about life, love, and whether kanelbullar are actually better than semlor. I think that’s what this film reminded me of—a good, long chat with an old vän.
But, there’s a little nag in my noggin because, let’s be honest, the plot meanders like a confused moose on the E4. It’s charming, sure, but also frustratingly slow in patches. And maybe it’s just me, but the “will-they-won’t-they” tension feels drawn out like those endless Swedish summer nights. Makes you wonder: is it really that hard to be honest with each other?
I’d say this flick mixes a kind of charming whimsicality with some genuine human contemplation. It’s sweet, no doubt, but not saccharine. And perhaps you’ll like it if you’ve ever wondered “what if…” in your own life.
Oh, and before I forget, check out the trailer for a little tease: What If.
