A Tangled Ride Through “Women in Trouble”
So I plopped myself down with “Women in Trouble”, a gem from 2009 directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, who’s not shy to spin a tangled web of stories in one go. It’s like a kaleidoscope of chick fun, starring the lovely Carla Gugino and Adrianne Palicki. I swear, every time Gugino is on screen, she lights it up like the Christmas tree in Kungsträdgården. Her role as a porn star, Elektra Luxx, deserves an Oscar in my old-school book.
It’s not all glitter and showbiz; there’s something more, lurking beneath the hilarity. The film zooms in on a day in the life of ten women, with a series of mishaps and breakthroughs. There’s a certain charm in how their stories bump into each other. I think the idea is to show us that everyone’s kinda muddling through, ya know?
Watching it took me back to the 90’s, when I had my own version of such a day while queueing for an ABBA tribute concert, surrounded by lovely stockholmare droning on about life’s mischaps and love’s absurdities. Turns out, sometimes chaos is the most relatable storyteller, like when you forget to bring an umbrella and it starts pouring the minute your stop is called.
But there’s one thing—some of the plot threads felt like they went nowhere, sorta like taking the wrong T-bana line only to end up in Farsta. I kinda wished for more closure on some characters’ stories. Yet, the film’s humor—they nailed it! Also, Emily Blunt’s brief stint was a treat, like spotting the first signs of summer in May.
If you’re up for giggles and a peek into the crazy lives of ten fascinating women, grab a fika and indulge in “Women in Trouble”. It might just remind you of those times when life was a whirlwind weekend in Göteborg, full of unexpected laughs.
